"The Potato Lab" is giving me all the right feels for a rom-com
All So Baek Ho has to do is raise an eyebrow + give a smirk, and I fall in love all over again. Kim Mi Kyung is built differentlyโshe fights him and her attraction for him in such creative ways. ๐
I started this kdrama because I was floundering about in kdramaland. โFriendly Rivalryโ is good, but itโs not enough to keep me hooked. โBuried Heartsโ has a gripping storyline, but I donโt want something dark and dramatic right now.
So I blindly watched the first episode of this kdrama with Lee Sun Bin and Kang Tae Oh. The plot was okay and I just clicked and hit play. Now I look forward to weekends even more. I just canโt get enough of these two. There wasnโt an episode that I didnโt laugh out loud, making my sister look at me in surprise.
Ah, โThe Potato Labโ kdrama, how do I love thee? Let me count thy waysโฆ
The Potato Gang and the rest of Mi Kyungโs colleagues
One of the things I liked about this kdrama is Mi Kyungโs colleagues โ their relationship and the way they treat each other. By the end of the first episode, I was even attached to their office because it just echoes this teamโs lively and colorful personalities. ๐
Weโre just at the fifth episode, and I think that oneโs my favorite. Who knew that breaking your bossโs chair could be so much fun? How can one broken chair be the catalyst for hilarity? Only the Potato Gang could pull this off. ๐
The new boss is cold as ice, but also hot, and the female lead doesnโt know what to do with that
Iโm a sucker for enemies-to-lovers or the hate-to-love trope, and Iโm happy to report that this kdrama does it in ways that will have your sides aching from laughing so much.
So Baek Ho is their new boss at The Potato Lab. He is strict, very by-the-book, methodical, and cold. He speaks so calmly, but his words can be deadly. Everyone is either in awe or terrified of him. The only one who dares to challenge him is Kim Mi Kyung, our fearless and rash but kind-hearted female lead.
There are times when Mi Kyungโs petty acts of revenge on Baek Ho borders on mean, and the way Baek Ho handles each one is pretty impressive. Theyโre a good match. So good that when Mi Kyung was asking Baek Ho for forgiveness yet again, it all turned into a series of the two of them one-upping each other. ๐คฃ
Mi Kyung is sure she hates Baek Ho and Baek Ho isnโt a fan of Mi Kyungโs childish revenge, but they both gravitate towards each other.
The exes are there to put everyone on their toes
As if the main leads arenโt chaotic enough on their own, the exes are there to add some drama, more chaos, misunderstandings, and laughter.
Park Ki Se is an executive in Wonhan, the very same company where Mi Kyung used to work and which has now acquired her current company. And guess what? Ki Se and Mi Kyung used to date and, based on her treatment of him, the relationship didnโt end well. And guess what? Ki Se is recently divorced with none other thanโฆ
Hee Jin, a free-spirited chaebol and a close friend of Baek Ho. Ki Se has been trying to get hold of her since their divorce, but she refused him every time he asked for a call or a meet-up. And again, guess who she ran to for help when she came back to Korea? Baek Ho.
Now put all these four together in one place and what do you get? Yeah, you get the idea. ๐
The best friend and the dongsaeng
We also have Ong Ju and Hwan Kyung, the female leadโs best friend and younger brother. I thought the only sane one in this kdrama was Hwan Kyung, until he and Ong Ju go on an impulsive trip to the beach. ๐
These two have been around each other for so long and even live under the same roof. Ong Ju has a colorful imagination and is quite quirky. Hwan Kyung is neat and helps run their rental place. Heโs just so adorable and clueless that I feel sorry for him, being surrounded by such crazy people. ๐
Other interesting things about โThe Potato Labโ:
So Baek Ho chose to stay in Mi Kyung, Ong Ju, and Hwan Kyungโs rental place while he was transitioning to his new role. You can just imagine what this does to the characters. ๐
The farmers treat So Baek Ho as one of their own, for better or worse. ๐
Baek Ho and Mi Kyungโs cat-dog romance is just equal parts funny and cute.
Watch out for Ki Seโฆ Heโs already jealous of Baek Ho before Hee Jin returned. What waits for us when he discovers his ex-wife runs to Baek Ho for help while ignoring him over and over? ๐
โThe Potato Labโ is a push-and-pull kind of romance with a lot of hilarious antics. Each episode keeps me entertained and makes me wish I could binge-watch all of them in just one sitting.
If youโre looking for a light and fluffy kdrama and need a good laugh, โThe Potato Labโ is perfect!
I am unabashedly in love with this kdrama!
