February is over and I'm still hungover
"My Dearest Nemesis" is such a delightful watch. "Somebody" Kdrama shocked me. Circling back to "When the Stars Gossip" because THE ENDING. Argh!
Why does it feel like each month feels shorter and shorter? Sometimes, I just want some months to last, like November and December. And once in a while, like some months, I want a handful of Kdramas to last. “Signal” and “Chicago Typewriter” come to mind.
March seems promising, with Kdramas like “The Potato Lab”, “Buried Hearts”, “Undercover High School”, “The Divorce Insurance”, and “When Life Gives You Tangerines.” I’m pretty excited about “The Divorce Insurance” and “Heo’s Restaurant.” What are you excited to watch this month? 🙂
“When the Stars Gossip” ending surprised me (and not in a good way)
I finally finished this Kdrama. I was enjoying all the episodes until I reached the last one. Was that heartbreaking ending necessary? 😭 I felt so cheated from having a good ending. I know that when it comes to writing stories, there are a hundred different ways a story could go in the end. I just wish “When the Stars Gossip” didn’t go down the "“someone needs to die” route. Just when we think the main couple is finally going to be happy after overcoming the obstacles, they throw at us the One Final Blow™ and boom! Just like that, the Kdrama was ruined for me.
Did I recover from it? Sure. I mean, it wasn’t as devastating as “Uncontrollably Fond”, but it did take me a couple of days to get over both the sadness and disappointment. Did I like the Kdrama? Overall, I did. Episodes 1-16 was great! I loved the funny parts, the three musketeers, the second female lead, and Ryong’s three mothers. I also really liked that the setting was mostly in space. It was truly interesting watching those scenes. While the ending did put a damper, I don’t hate the whole show.
“My Dear Nemesis” is just plain hilarious and it’s adorable
You know how in K-pop groups, there’s always that one member who is a ray of sunshine? If that member was a recently aired Kdrama, it would be “My Dear Nemesis.” (I always thought “Black Salt Dragon” was such a cool title.” But after watching the first few episodes, I now understand why they went with “My Dear Nemesis.”)
This Kdrama is such a fun and hilarious series! The main female lead, Baek Su Jong, used to be a high school student who was once addicted to playing an online game. Through the game, she met a player called “Black Dragon” and was crushing on him even though they never met in person. When that time came, she was horrified when a middle schooler presented himself to her. I’m not going to say more, in case you plan on watching it, but that proposal scene had me laughing and cringing at the same time. 😂
Fast forward to to 16 years later, Su Jong is a very hardworking team lead at Yongseong Department Store. She is dubbed as the “Director Killer”, because three of them have resigned because of her. Then one day, their team gets a new director, Ban Ju Yeon. The two immediately clash and hilarity ensues.
Ju Yeon is actually a chaebol leading a double life. He needs to maintain his clean image for his grandmother. Outside work, he’s into toy collectibles and rock music/concerts. It doesn’t fit the image that he desperately strives for, if only to fill in his deceased father’s shoes, and he’s careful not to let anyone find out about it.
The two working in the same team and within close proximity of each other at work bring in all the fun and laughter. (Good for us viewers! Not so much for the main leads. 😁) I can’t wait for when they finally find out about their history. I can just imagine the chaos. 😂 This noona romcom is definitely bringing out all the chuckles and laughter with chaotic scenes, such as getting drunk while trying to one-up each other during a team dinner.
While “My Dear Nemesis” is not a groundbreaking rom-com, it is still enjoyable to watch. I highly recommend it if you want something light and fluffy.
“Somebody” kdrama is not for the weak
Oh, boy. Where to start? This kdrama caught me off-guard and – not gonna lie – shocked me with some scenes. I started watching this because someone posted a video clip and decided to try it after finding out that there’s a serial killer in the plot. I do love Kdramas like “Beyond Evil”, “Through the Darkness”, and “Come and Hug Me.”
In “Somebody”, we have Kim Sum, the developer of an app called “Somebody.” She’s someone who is searching to feel emotions and be understood. As a child, she was loved by her mother. She was even teaching young Sum different emotions like fear, happiness, and love through flashcards. Sum is aware that she lacks empathy and is different from other people. She does have a best friend, Yeong Gi Eun, who is a detective.
When the public goes wild over the news that people are being killed through the Somebody dating app, Gi Eun starts investigating it together with her other friend, a shaman named Im Mok Won. However, it’s the same app that brought Seong Yun Oh to Gi Eun, a charming architect who wins over her.
And there we have it: The deadly love triangle of a genius app developer, a detective, and a serial killer. No spoiler here, folks. It’s established pretty early on that Yun Oh is the serial killer using the Somebody dating app.
This Kdrama is dark. If you’re like me who can’t stomach animal cruelty and murder scenes, tread carefully. Although they aren’t graphic in detail, I still squirmed every time I thought I’d be shown one. I used the fast-forward button on some scenes. 😅 I do love horror, but the supernatural kind. I do love murder mysteries, but can’t stomach gory or torture scenes. What can I say? I’m a fragile flower. 😆
“Somebody” is only eight episodes short and, while the start may unravel slowly, it’s worth sticking around and watching the horror unfold. This is a layered Kdrama, where we learn about Sum – why she is the way she is – and how she grapples and deals with the new and odd things that unfold the moment Yun Oh enters her life. We also get to see how Gi Eun and Mok Won are affected by the chain of events.
I highly recommend this series if you’re looking for something dark, twisted, and thrilling. The ending was not what I expected, but I liked it a lot.
And that’s all I have for you folks! 🙂 I plan on getting started with “The Potato Lab.” I have been watching “Friendly Rivalry” but I’m not sure if I’ll continue with that one. What Kdramas are keeping you glued to the screen? 🙂
I hope March is kind to you. 🫶🏼 Enjoy the Kdramas you’re currently watching, whether they’re old or recent. If you know any good Kdrama with serial killers, please drop your comments below! Thank you. 😁
I’ve been going through a slump—not a K-Drama or reading slump, but a life slump. Haha (I laugh but I’m 🫠) I finished Love Scout today and can’t wait to watch When Life Gives You Tangerines and My Dear Nemesis (renewed by Viki subscription for the latter!) I truly hope March is fab binge-watching wise. Aching to feel something 🙃
I watched Somebody without knowing the context and thought it was just a sci-fi since there was a robot mentioned... I tell you, the way that drama traumatized me, I can't even explain or else I'll relive it.
