Current kdramas + Korean snack combos perfect for your kdrama watching
Snuggling up with some yummy snacks as I watch my kdramas. Do you eat while watching your favorite shows, too? What's your favorite snack combo?
안녕하세요, 여러분! 어떻게 지내세요? Today, I bring you time traveling straight from the 90s, with a side of five snack combos that you can wolf down while watching whatever kdrama floats your boat. Are you ready? Grab your favorite snack (or snacks – plural – if you’re like me, because food is life, really) and let’s get this online kdrama catch-up started! ☺️
“Hit the Top” kdrama: baggy jeans + popular 90s singer slides his way into the future
As I mentioned in my previous issue, “Parasyte: The Grey” and “Lovely Runner” were set to be released in April and oh wow. How time flies because here we are: the alien kdrama already out in the wild and complete and the one with the pop idol story also out there giving tears, laughter, and hope to its audience.
Are you watching one of them? Maybe both? I honestly have yet to get started, only because I am so caught up and invested in the 2017 kdrama, “Hit the Top.” How have I not watched this sooner?? 😯 This one caught my interest because of a video clip I saw on TikTok, the one where Jae Hyun went sliding his way down the stairs and straight into the future, all fresh from 1993.
I do love the time travel trope. I just didn’t know that it was part of “Hit the Top” kdrama! Now I’m at episode 16 and I can’t wait to finish it! There’s just so much chaos and laughter here. I think this might become one of my all-time favorites. It doesn’t hurt that it also has the found family trope and that Jae Hyun and the female lead dislike each other. I can never get enough of the two of them arguing and dissing each other. 😂
If you’re into comedy with a dash of romance, then you might want to check out “Hit the Top.” Its story also comes wrapped with found family, friendship, and the struggles of finding oneself in this crazy busy world.
Presenting: Korean food combinations to try while watching your favorite kdrama
I mentioned this in my personal blog: I have this habit (quirk?) of taking food seriously when it’s time for some kdrama. There was a time that I was so obsessed with tuna mayo rice bowl (참치 마요 덮밥). I had it night after night after night. I just couldn’t get enough of it. I have graduated from that phase, but I still go back to it from time to time. It’s very easy to make and it’s delicious. As someone who doesn’t cook, that’s an absolute win-win for me!
Now I’m ready to try other Korean food and was wondering what are the perfect combos, because I need good food while I watch “Hit the Top” later tonight. Thanks to almighty Google, I was able to narrow down my search and decided to share them with you. I hope you enjoy this list! And if you’ve tried some (or all) of them, please do share how it went for you. 🙂
Ze list of the food pairing best for kdrama watching:
Ramyeon with tteokbokki
You can buy an instant one, but nothing beats making your own. They’re also easy to cook and quite convenient. Just pop into a Korean grocery store and you’ll find the ingredients.
My Korean Kitchen has a great post about making one. Look at how delicious it looks from one of their photos below!
Kimchi pancakes (kimchijeon) with makgeolli
I just love how crispy and full of flavor kimchi pancakes are. Pairing it with a cold glass of makgeolli seems like a great idea, too!
”For Koreans, rainy days, Kimchi pancake (kimchi jeon) and makgeolli go together like hot chocolate goes together with chilly wintery days for Americans.”
– Jin Joo, creator of kimchimari website

Kimbap with spicy tuna or bulgogi filling
Kimbap is convenient and tasty. I like the spicy tuna and bulgogi ones. Plus points if they have cheese in them! 🤤
I keep coming back to Jin Joo’s website. She offers more than just the recipe, as it comes with some musings and food for thought.

Doesn’t that look heavenly? Head over here for Jin Joo’s kimbap recipe.
Fried chicken and japchae
I think this is my favorite, because they’re really filling. I feel so satisfied when eating this combo. 😌 Okay, so it’s something I’ve tried from Bon Chon and from a Korean food stall near the place where I used to live. Both are so delicious. I would still eat them anytime.
Korean corn dogs with toppings
I think the best Korean-style corn dog I had was the one I ate while in Boracay. Korean corn dogs are coated in a crispy batter (yum!) and usually has cheese or sausage fillings. They also have different toppings for them, like sugar, ketchup and mustard, gochujang, and spicy mayo. I’m sure there are other toppings.
Flash of inspiration: I’m going to make it my quest this year to taste various corn dogs from different Korean food establishments. 💃🏻
And that’s it for me! I hope you enjoyed reading this issue. Enjoyed it enough to make you go and hunt for your own favorite snack combos. Until my next newsletter, happy eating and kdrama watching!
